Keep Em Safer – Truck And Freight News

In Victoria, all loads—whether on a trailer, ute, or heavy vehicle must be properly restrained to prevent them from falling, shifting, or affecting vehicle stability.

Failing to secure a load is an offence, even if the load does not fall off, and can result in significant fines.

Key Load Safety Requirements

Prevent Movement:
Loads must be restrained to withstand forward, backward, upward, and sideways movement.

Stability:
The load must not affect the vehicle’s stability, steering, or braking performance.

Containment:
Loose items, such as gravel, soil, or green waste, must be covered or contained.

Protrusion:
Loads must not protrude in a way that could injure people, damage property, or obstruct other drivers.

Responsibility:
The driver is legally responsible for ensuring the load is secured.

Tips for Safe Load Restraint

Use Proper Equipment:
Use rated webbing straps, chains, or cargo nets.

Chains are best for heavy loads, while nets/tarpaulins are suited for lighter, loose loads.

Anti-Slip Matting:
Place rubber matting underneath heavy or smooth items to significantly increase friction and prevent sliding.

Positioning:
Keep heavy items low and distribute the weight evenly across the tray or trailer.

Check Regularly:
Inspect restraints shortly after starting the journey, as loads tend to settle, causing straps to loosen.

Penalties and Reporting

Fines:
Unsecured loads can lead to fines for individuals and much higher penalties for companies.

Emergencies:
If a load falls off and creates a hazard, call 13 11 70 for assistance.
